What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

The neuropsychological evaluation not only assesses cognitive function across constructs such as attention, memory, aptitude, etc., but also includes a measure of emotional status to provide differential diagnoses where needed. Referring treatment providers find these types of evaluations invaluable as it would relate to implementing appropriate therapeutic modalities and choosing the right class of medication. Testing is also particularly useful for students who are struggling academically and may not understand the reasons why. Testing tends to be most useful when it can correlate with functional outcomes. To illustrate, neuropsychologists are often asked to render professional opinions regarding a person’s capacity for independent living, if an individual remains safe to operate a motor vehicle, and to determine if college or trade school is the most appropriate path for a high school student. Providing this type of service allows for the opportunity to come alongside patients who may be confused or upset by particular symptoms. The neuropsychological evaluation provides diagnostic clarity regarding the reasons why patients struggle, which often times leads to psychological relief. As noted in the mission statement, Elevate Neuropsychology is built on integrity, loyalty, and humility; it is our hope that every patient would see these qualities come to life in their personal experience with us.
